Exceptional cooking at this unassuming little restaurant on the North Gower coast
There’s absolutely no pretension about Ian and Jay Bennett’s excellent little restaurant. Locals will tell you that this is some of the best food you can get in South West Wales and they’d be right. At the Welcome to Town, it’s all about what goes on the plate. And Ian Bennett, with a background that includes an apprenticeship at Michel Roux’s Waterside Inn, knows how to impress with his use of excellent local produce and a balance in the cooking that is the sign of an superb chef.
The restaurant makes the most of its location and a good relationship with local fishermen. This is the place to get properly cooked lobster (when available) with Gower new potatoes - a simple, but perfect dish. The same crustacean may also come in a beautiful pressed terrine with a saffron vinaigrette whilst main courses might include roast best end of Welsh lamb, with a herb crust, minted pea puree, sauce cuisson and gratin dauphinoise. Naturally, given the chef’s background, the style is heavily Francophile, but you rarely see this kind of classical French cooking done with such assurance. A little treasure.
Closed Mondays and only open for lunch on Sundays.
Every other day lunch is served 12noon-2pm and dinner is served 7pm-9.30pm.
