World Bog Snorkelling Championships
Date: Aug 2009 (annual)
Theme: Spectacle
Rating: 3 Stars
There is a bizarre art to bog snorkelling; one that involves being able to glide through the thick peat waters without either displaying any recognisable swimming strokes or swallowing any of the foul smelling (and tasting) bog water. Wet suits are optional but advisable and speed is of the essence. There are four categories in total: world, women's, junior and local champions.
The championships were the brainchild of a particularly drunken session in the local pub back in 1986 as a clever fundraising initiative. All proceeds from this funny, fascinating and fantastic sporting event are donated to charities and good causes in the region.
