One of Wales' finest restaurants, topped up with charming rooms and handsome grounds
Chris and Gunna Chown’s Georgian manor house has long been a destination for culinary pilgrims anxious to sample Chris’s justly celebrated Michelin starred cooking. It’s no surprise then to find that Plas Bodegroes styles itself as a “restaurant with room.” Banish any thought though, that things outside the kitchen and restaurant might be something of an afterthought.
You could stay here and not eat and still have a wonderful time although you’d clearly be nuts. The lovely rooms with their goose-down duvets, Egyptian cotton and views over the gardens are a delight in themselves. Those gardens are a perfect place to take it easy – a stroll amongst the avenue of 200 year old beech trees is a must – and they’re part of a nicely chilled atmosphere that transcends the often stuffy atmosphere of a country house hotel.
It’s impossible not to return to the food though. The simple sounding style of the menu belies great technical skill from someone who has been in pioneer in the celebration of top-notch Welsh ingredients. A truly great restaurant with really good rooms sums it up neatly.
