Historic coaching inn given a sensitive modern makeover
Old it most certainly is, starting out life as a coaching house and a key staging point on the route to Ireland. Over the intervening centuries, the “Bull” (as it is more commonly known) hasn’t stood still and it’s most recent incarnation it offers quality and comfort that stands comparison with the best.
The Bull boasts two restaurants, one being styled as a brasserie. It seems to have pulled off a rare achievement in that both are highly rated and celebrated in various guides to eating out with the brasserie offering a less formal option from the fine dining restaurant. These are supplemented by a warm and convivial bar that retains the feel of it being at the centre of local life.
Bedrooms are unashamedly contemporary in terms of their décor, furnishings and facilities, yet the vital character of the historic building is apparent everywhere in the form of beams and rooms with wonderfully eccentric shapes dictated by the old architecture. It’s a superb balance between the historic and the modern and it’s one that has made the Bull a terrific destination in its own right – you don’t have to be heading for Ireland, it’s worth stopping right here.
