Close together and in lovely surroundings, two fine examples of 17th century religious architecture
These delightful religious sites are located close together in beautiful countryside just west of Corwen. Rug is a rare example of a little altered private 17th century chapel. Built for Colonel William Salusbury in 1637, its interior reflects the Colonel's 'High Church' religious views. Fine seventeenth-century interior fittings are characterised by extensive carvings and decoration.
Llangar Church is even older than Rug, and similarly takes visitors back to another age. This small medieval parish church stands in an idyllic setting a mile or so south of Rug overlooking the confluence of the Dee and Alwen rivers. It retains many ancient features, including extensive 15th century wall paintings and a 17th century figure of death.
Rug Chapel is open 1 April to 30 September: 10.00am - 5.00pm Wednesday to Sunday.
Llangar Old Church is open 1 April to 30 September. Access may be arranged Wednesday to Sunday through the Custodian at Rug Chapel; please telephone (01490) 412025 for details.
Both monuments are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (except Bank Holiday weekends) between 1 April to 30 September. They are both open at all other times.
