Historic abbey and the last resting place of the Welsh Princes and possibly, a legendary medieval poet
Initially founded in 1164 on a nearby site, the present buildings were erected under the patronage of the Lord Rhys (d. 1197). The Cistercians at Strata Florida were loyal supporters of the Welsh Princes, whose graves lie outside the church. Tradition has it that Dafydd ap Gwilym, the greatest poet of medieval Wales, was also buried within the precincts of the abbey, and a memorial slab commemorating him stands in the north transept.
