Over 180 years old, Trefriw Woollen Mills is one of the few remaining mills of what was once an important Welsh industry. Originally a Pandy or fulling mill it’s situated on the fast running River Crafnant, making full use of the water to power the mill and wash the wool.
You’ll experience traditional weaving and see the machines on which raw wool is transformed into beautiful bedspreads, tapestries and tweeds. The Mill carries out all the processes from fleece to fabric on similar machinery to that used in the Industrial Revolution. Try a little hand weaving yourself. The hydro-electrical turbines that generate the electricity are also well worth a look.
Make sure you visit the shop to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of Bara brith in the tearoom.
