Strumble Head and Fishguard

Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, SA64 0DE

Category: Places to visit, Pembrokeshire

Strumble Head is a huge headland with an imposing lighthouse guarding Fishguard harbour. It also commands some stunning views of the coastline including Cardigan Bay. It’s the closest point to Ireland from Wales and you can usually see the ferries coming and going between Rosslare in Ireland and Fishguard. It’s a peaceful spot, ideal for seabird spotting, easily reached, either by the rugged coast path or a floral country lane. The coast between Strumble Head and Fishguard was the site of the last invasion of Britain in 1797 by Franco-Irish soldiers. At Carregwastad Point there’s a headstone marking the ill-fated incursion – the troops got drunk and never made it any further. As well as being a major ferry port, Fishguard has a picturesque harbour and quayside known as Lower Fishguard. This was where Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood was filmed in the 1970s as well as Moby Dick. Upper Fishguard bustles with shops, restaurants and pubs.
