Matt and Lisa Tebbutt have created a very special restaurant from a former pub and stationmaster’s house in this little village just outside Abergavenny. Matt returned to Wales after eight years in London working for great names like Marco Pierre White, Alistair Little and Sally Clarke. Together with Lisa, he embarked on a classy kitting out of the old building, managing to retain much of the original character whilst bringing some 21st century style to the mix.

Matt’s mentors shine through in robust but clear-flavoured cooking. Just looking at the frequently changing menu is enough to get the taste buds overexcited and on any given day the Foxhunter surely offers one of the most appealing list of dishes in Wales. Dishes like wild garlic soup, poached egg and grilled bruschetta or deep fried sweetbreads with mustard, caper and red cabbage remoulade are fairly typical of a style that reflects a lot of effort going into the sourcing of high quality and exciting ingredients.

Some items (cottage pie with buttered spring greens) can seem deceptively simple, but the eating proves that there is a deep appreciation of flavour in the kitchen and a real understanding of what makes good food. Foodies will love this place for the interest in the menu and the excellence of the cooking, the less gastronomically inclined will appreciate the honesty and generosity of many of the dishes. In other words, you can’t lose.

And if you fancy coming back for more – book yourself into the Foxhunter Cottage, a mere stone’s throw from the restaurant.

Tuesday to Saturday: Lunch 12pm-2.30pm and Dinner 7pm-9.30pm. Also open on Mother's Day, Father's Day, Food Festival and other Sundays on request.
