Country inn with a relaxed style, terrific food and a warm heart
“Eat, Drink, Sleep” says the sign outside this exemplary country inn. They might well have added “relax,” as everything about the Griffin is an invitation to take it easy and wrap oneself in the warm comfort that the place seems to exude from every pore of the building.
At the heart of the operation is the food, unfussy but carefully crafted and with a real commitment to using the best of the local bounty (including most notably the harvest from their own kitchen garden). The usually bustling dining room with its mix and match chairs and bare wooden tables is cheerfully without pretension and service, well-informed and efficient, comes appropriately without undue ceremony. Breakfast is taken in communal country house style in front of the Aga on which you are invited to make your own toast.
The seven bedrooms neatly blend modern comforts and contemporary style with the rustic charm of the building. Expect crisp linen, stylish furnishings and a selection of interesting old tomes – but don’t go in search of a television. One of the many beauties of the place is that it never forgets that at root it’s a country pub sandwiched between the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains - albeit one with some very special charms.
