Guardian Hay Festival
Date: May - Jun 2009 (annual)
Theme: Literature
Rating: 4 Stars
This year's programme features the Duchess of Devonshire and Charlotte Mosley, former US president Jimmy Carter and American novelist John Irving.
Hay is renowned for its good food, second-hand books and peaceful atmosphere. The annual festival floods the town with visitors, media types, writers and liggers, disrupting the peace and quiet. But it's no Glastonbury - a visit should leave you flushed with enthusiasm rather than stressed or exhausted.
The event is not limited to the strictly literary; there are a number of concerts and comedy shows on offer, as well as a choice of restaurants.
