George Borrow, one of Britain’s earliest travel writers, described Llandovery as ‘the pleasantest little town in which I have halted’. This compliment may well have had something to do with the hospitality he received at The Castle. Like many traditional coaching inns, its fortunes have waxed and waned since Borrow’s 19th-century meanderings. We are delighted to report that it’s back with a bang thanks to the vision and flair of new owners who have already worked their magic on Peterstone Court, another Rarebits member. Forget the sepia image of the tired, draughty inn. Welcome to the reborn Castle, a warm, laid-back and fashionable country bolthole.
You sense the transformation as soon as you walk through the door. There’s a cosy little ‘Cwtch’ (no translation necessary) and a series of spaces decorated in an appealing rustic/modern style that’s hip and historic all at once. The Castle is at the heart of the market town, literally and figuratively. It’s Llandovery’s social hub, a place where locals and visitors mingle to eat and drink. And the food, like the place itself, is honest, natural, robust and fresh, ‘the type you really want to eat’. You’ll also want to stay. The bedrooms are a revelation. Gone are the wonky floors and dusty, dreary décor. Warm colours, quality furnishings, plump beds and spacious, sleek bathrooms, all finished in a timeless, non-faddy style, fit the historic building like a glove. It’s great value – and on the doorstep of great walking, cycling, mountain biking and birdwatching in George Borrow’s ‘Wild Wales’.
