This charming Victorian resort – the name comes from the French word ‘mamelles’, meaning ‘breasts’, a reference to the two islets off Mumbles Head – grew up around the old fishing village of Oystermouth. Today, it’s a popular sailing centre and has a restored Victorian pier and a lighthouse. It’s also got a reputation for good food and you’ll find a great choice of fine restaurants as well as shops and bars. The hilltop above the town is occupied by Oystermouth Castle, founded as a Norman watchtower,it was built to withstand attacks from the rowdy Welsh. Today, there are the remains of a late 13th-century keep next to a more ornate three-storey ruin featuring a banqueting hall and state rooms. The surrounding parkland offers fabulous views over the Mumbles headland, the city of Swansea and its bay. An unusual attraction of this seaside village is the Lovespoon Gallery, where you can see an amazing variety of unique love tokens, traditionally carved from wood by young men for their sweethearts.
