The Bell is one of those places that you almost want to keep as your own special secret. Its perfect rural village setting makes it feel like one of those places you might just stumble across. But given the amount of favourable comment the place has garnered since its rejuvenation, there are plenty of eager folk beating a path to the door.

Dining here captures all the best elements of the new style of pub dining in the UK. Food is taken seriously, but not in a po-faced way and the style is very much based on obtaining top-quality raw materials to work with. There are plenty of classics such as moules mariniere served with warm crusty bed, ham-hock terrine with a fig compote or main course like seared calf’s liver with garlic and thyme mash and braised red cabbage.

It’s good to see a menu sensitive to the seasons too, veering from the hearty in the winter to the lighter and fresher dishes in the summer. The wine list is a bit of a masterpiece and offers the opportunity to splash out on some great vintages that you don’t come by too often.
