A house with a warm, outgoing personality. The best of all worlds - Georgian harmony blended with contemporary comfort and inspired interior design. Restful, secluded country location, yet just a few miles from the coast.
It’s difficult to believe that 25 years ago there were holes in the roof of this magnificent Grade I listed Georgian mansion. Nanteos would look good in Jane Austen’s Bath. It looks even better tucked away at the end of a long private drive surrounded by smooth hills a few miles from Aberystwyth.
Nanteos is one of those rare houses with a personality that embraces you as soon as you walk through the door. It’s warm and instantly welcoming, to the extent that you don’t feel a stranger in strange surroundings. This is down to hospitality as well as that harmonious Georgian ambience.
‘We like our guest to feel part of the family,’ says Mark Rawlings-Lloyd who, with his youthful, professional staff, soon ‘remove the barriers to it being a hotel’.
The Morning Room is large and luxuriously appointed, with comfy, restful sofas - but don’t worry, you’re encouraged to put your feet up. A grand staircase and landing area leads to the suites and bedrooms, all of which are one-offs and have been subject - like the entire mansion - to fastidious tip-to-toe renovation.
Those responsible for Nanteos’s interior design deserve a medal. Rarely have we seen such a sensitive rebirth. Nanteos’s renaissance honours its Georgian past while giving it a contemporary edge. The fabrics and furnishings are faultless, the bathrooms classic examples of enduring elegance devoid of faddy minimalism.
Back downstairs, there’s an immaculate dining room where the food is, typically, a fusion of traditional and modern influences. Superbly crafted self-catering is also available, with the option of using the hotel facilities.
