Ynyshir is without doubt one of Britain’s finest small country hotels. Like the best of that breed it offers the expected high standards of comfort and service but also displays a great individuality that marks it apart from the crowd. Much of that personality stems from the owners, Rob and Joan Reen, who have left no stone unturned in their determination to make this a very special place to stay.
Ynyshir has intrinsic qualities too though; the 16th-century house has previously been cherished by the likes of Queen Victoria and William Mappin (of Mappin and Webb jewellers), and the surrounding scenery is amongst the most beautiful in Wales. Dining is taken very seriously and in Shayne Hughes, the Reens have found a head chef who works relentlessly to perfect his art and please his guests. There is real ambition and exquisite judgement in the cooking, which is no more than one would expect when the same traits are so evident elsewhere in the hotel.
Rob Reen is a celebrated artist and his dramatic landscapes capturing the varying moods of the west Wales countryside lead the decoration throughout the public rooms and bedrooms. The latter are named after famous artists and each is individually designed with antique beds and furniture, enhanced by rich colour schemes, lovely bathrooms and many extra touches.
In front of the house are its own beautiful lawns, beyond that the steep slopes of the rugged hillsides. Just behind the hotel you'll find the Dovey Estuary with its curlews, oystercatchers and herons – idyllic doesn’t seem too strong a term for once.
