What an unexpected mix of styles! From the outside, the Royal Oak looks like a town-centre hotel that has witnessed its fair share of history - which it has, of course, being originally a Georgian coaching inn. But step inside and you’d be forgiven for thinking that Welshpool had suddenly become West London.

The spacious, sweeping bar is as modern and metropolitan as they come, while the restaurant is fitted out in a style that’s chunky, clean and cosmopolitan. The Royal Oak has moved on under the ownership of Malcolm and Emma Bebb, but it’s still as warm and welcoming as ever, with traditional touches like old beams, open fireplaces and period black-and-white photographs playing a part in its new personality.

Fifteen of the 25 bedrooms have also been transformed and Rarebits guests should request one of these when booking. They’re neat and tasteful, with a choice of classic or contemporary styles (why don’t more hotels offer this?). If you’re a fan of magnificently carved French beds and pretty fabrics, go for the former. The contemporary rooms adopt the simpler, more boutiquey look.

The Royal Oak is friendly and unpretentious - and offers excellent value for money. It neatly plugs a gap in the Rarebits network in a busy, handsome market town surrounded by places to visit. You don’t even need the car. Walk through the park to Powis Castle, a magnificent National Trust house and gardens. Pop down to Welshpool Wharf for a trip on the Montgomery Canal. Or ride the Welshpool and Llanfair narrow-gauge railway. And on Mondays Welshpool holds Europe’s biggest sheep market.
