It may look like an ordinary, albeit pretty, pub from the outside, but owners Mark and Sue Manson have made Y Polyn far from average.

Just a mile or so from the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, the whitewashed, half-timbered building has become a destination in itself and you’ll need to book a couple of weeks in advance to secure a weekend table.

A menu of deceptively simple food with the emphasis on top-notch (often local) ingredients and some of the classic European bistro dishes comes with a great value selection of wines. Susan's husband Mark runs out front, and as an ex-AA restaurant inspector it’s a case of gamekeeper turned poacher, but the response from his former guidebook peers (an Egon Ronay Star included) has been enthusiastic.

Y Polyn runs a relaxed front of house, (don’t expect too much standing on ceremony) that complements the dining room with its bare wood tables and chapel chairs.
