Outside, weatherproof Welsh sheep graze on the flanks of Cader Idris. Inside you could well be in a trendy city bar. Cross Foxes is one of a new breed of country pubs where rural meets cosmopolitan. It’s the inspired creation of Nicol and Dewi Gwynne, who transformed an empty wreck into a warm, sophisticated‘bar, grill and rooms’.

Externally, dark-stoned Cross Foxes looks sombre and staid. Onceinside you’re unexpectedly plunged into a cool, casual temple of today, complete with metrostyle bar, subdued lighting and sleek surfaces. Yet Cross Foxes’ roots still show through – in the best possible way – in the clever use of local slate, stone and wood.

This fusion of styles also influences the well-priced menu (tapas platters and classics like Welsh Black beef). Most of all, it shines through in the faultless bedrooms (with fabulous top-end bathrooms), enlivened by arty touches.
