Clough Williams Ellis acquired the site for Portmeirion in 1925 for less than £5,000 as it was then, 'a neglected wilderness'. There’s no doubt that he had found himself a wonderful location which would surely be celebrated for its views, even if the famous architect had never seen fit to site his wonderful, stylised Italianate village there.

It’s hard to avoid using the word magical in respect of Portmeirion, there’s an absurdist, comic edge to the design that gives the place an other-worldly beauty and charm. Around every corner there seems to be some surprise and the whole package is enhanced by the wonderful edge-of-estuary setting.

The village also offers some great little craft shops and, of course, there is the opportunity to purchase the famous Portmeirion pottery. Refreshments are available in the Town Hall self-service restaurant and there is the opportunity to treat yourself at the Portmeirion Hotel or Castell Deudraeth.
