Once one of the farthest outposts of the Roman Empire, the pretty town of Caerleon has a stunning selection of Roman artefacts, not to mention the remains of several important Roman buildings including an amphitheatre and the only remains of a Roman Legionary barracks on view anywhere in Europe.

The Romans founded their fortress at Caerleon in 75AD. One of just three permanent fortresses in Roman Britain, it guarded the region for over 200 years. Modern-day visitors to the National Roman Legion Museum, set within the walls of the old fortress, will learn just what it was that made the Romans such a formidable fighting force. There is a large collection of objects showing how the soldiers lived, fought, worshipped and died. At weekends or during school holidays, children can step into a life-size barrack room and try on replica armour. The museum is within easy reach of the M4, Cardiff and Bristol.
