Question: How do you turn a 300-year-old coaching inn into an attractive, modern hotel? Answer: Ask Kevin and Anne Davies. A few years back, this entrepreneurial couple set about reinventing this long-standing Newcastle Emlyn hostelry as a swish, stylish, contemporary hotel, truly a mammoth task which was completed – to well-deserved and instant acclaim – in 2011. The top-to-bottom refurbishment really was a Grand Redesign. Gwesty’r Emlyn is a bit like the Tardis. First impressions from the outside are those of a modest country town hotel. It’s only when you go through the archway that the extent of this substantial property becomes apparent.
The rooms – which come in a variety of sizes and styles from standard to suites – are pin-sharp immaculate, finished in tasteful neutral tones with throws and cushions adding a splash of colour. Luxury bathrooms are a given, and all rooms are individually designed to reflect the character of this fine listed building. There’s a strong ‘Sense of Place’ at Gwesty’r Emlyn, reinforced by an extremely welcoming staff who provide genuine hospitality from this Welsh-speaking part of Wales. The theme is also decidedly local when it comes to the food, which relies on honest-to-goodness local ingredients (including coracle-caught salmon from the River Teifi). In summer, there’s also a separate Italian pasta and pizza restaurant in the courtyard. The courtyard Old Coach House contains a fitness suite with gymnasium, spa pool and sauna. Gwesty’r Emlyn is a versatile touring centre, close to gardens and castles, the beautiful Teifi Valley and Cardigan Bay.
