This gregarious couple have now ploughed their energy and passion into Ffarm, creating pure gold from a run-down property in a masterful head-to-toe restoration. Perhaps they should have changed the name while they were at it, for Ffarm is no country bumpkin. It’s an imposing Grade II listed Gothic-style house, complete with castellated roofline, dating back to 1706. Inside, it’s true to its solid, historic pedigree, defined by dark carved wood, exquisite tiled floors, imposing fireplaces, mullioned windows, a wide staircase and tall ceilings. But here comes the clever bit: it in no way resembles a gloomy Victorian mausoleum. Ffarm is an exquisite mix of historic features and high fashion. Vivid colour and contemporary design have transformed the house into a plush, luxurious country bolthole that’s mini-mansion, mini-country house, and maxi-fashionable.
Then there’s the wine. It’s an enduring Platt passion, stitched – if not spilled – into the fabric of this highly individual rarebit. The bedrooms (big, comfy beds, all mod cons, faultless bathrooms) are subtly themed by wine region, and there are oenological allusions everywhere, in Provençal paintings, Château Margaux labels and Burgundian (ie plummy red) curtains in the room dedicated to the best of Côte de Beaune. Dinner is served Friday and Saturday, with light snacks by prior arrangement midweek.
