Foodies flock to the ‘Golden Triangle’ between Brecon, Abergavenny and Hay-on-Wye, where an unprecedented number of outstanding restaurants have sprung up in the last 15 years. One of the leading lights, whose car park is always packed and restaurant is invariably buzzing, is Llanwenarth in the Usk Valley between Abergavenny and Crickhowell. The success of this appealing hotel and restaurant is down to a straightforward, unpretentious approach - good food, a relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy it, and excellent value for money.
Llanwenarth’s owners, Richard Wallace and Jon West, are experienced, highly successful restaurateurs. They know what works. The look and layout of the spacious Riverside Restaurant creates just the right ambience. And the restaurant’s big picture windows make the most of the splendid views across the Usk. Dishes on the well-chosen menu range from simple to sophisticated, but all are defined by careful preparation and skilful cooking. The wines, too, are interesting and reasonably priced, and service is spot on (the staff are engaging and well drilled, a combination that’s not easy to achieve).
The food isn’t the only thing to write home about. The neatly proportioned, well-equipped rooms have been upgraded with new decor and bathroom suites, and many have balconies overlooking that lovely river view. One room is fully equipped for wheelchair users. The location’s good too - close to the Brecon Beacons and border country, and just a few miles from the lively, prosperous market town of Abergavenny.
